4379 Sata Driver

I am having the same difficulty and it is very annoying.

same situation with my Acer Aspire 5100

I am having same problem hope someone figures this out

I have the same problem  with my Acer Aspire 5100 too.

It s not working on my Aspire 5100, either. AMD Turion 64 X2, Radeon Xpress 1100, one gig ram. I d love to be able to fix it.

same problem here.

Also the acer aspire 5100 gives the ati 4379 update and an error.

Somebody who can help us.

I have the same problem with the 5100..Its starting to get on my nerves bigtime.

As far as why the update doesn t work, it relates to something in the system using the same hardware name, ie. ATI 4379 Serial ATA Controller name is in use error I continue to get. As far as hiding the update, all you need to do is go to view available update, right-click the update  in question, and select hide update. You ll get the classic User Access prompt and you ll be done.

P.S. To re enable the update late, all you have to do it select restore hidden update.

I also have the same problem. Aspire 5100. Once again, best bet is to remind me later so you can at least maintain some system functionality. There better be a fix soonthis is a joke.

Same problem. acer aspire 3100.

Serial ATA controller sucks

Here is the fix

Go to the Silicon image support website: 0 cid 0

download the appropriate DRIVER not bios for whatever your computer has - SiI3112 for Non-Raid 2 port SATA 150 controllers, SiI3114 for 4 port controllers, SiI3512 for 2 port RAID controllers.

Unzip the driver file into a directory.

Go to device manager and update drivers for the problem component.  Go to have disk and point the browser to the folder with the. inf file for the component.  Update the drivers and reboot.

My computer Acer Aspire 5100 works fine now.

email me at applepei00 gmail.com if you need help.  I may be slow in answering, but I will get to you.

this all sounds complicated. what s the point of updating this driver anyway. my issue with my acer 5100 laptop is the playback of video and audio. very choppy and don t know why. vista is very slow on this laptop in comparison with xp. anyone else experience that too.

anyway, how do i know which SiI3 my laptop has. where do i find this out. any help is greatly appreciated.

thanks

I am having the same problemshas anyone found a solution to help us computer chalenged

I m having the same problem on my Acer Aspire 5100. Has anyone found a fix for this problem yet. as of 6/16/2007. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Okay so here s another fix just in case - the fix mentioned above did not work for me so I set about figuring other ways.

First off, when the computer boots and Vista attempts to install a driver for the device in question - the ATI 4379 Serial ATA Controller - let it fail and then hide it in Windows Update. From what I gather, the reason the driver fails to install is because the hardware component ATI 4379 isn t actually installed I have an Acer Aspire 5100 as well. I m not entirely sure about the assumption I just made, but that s the only reason I can think of for why the driver install would never work.

Next, go into the Device Manager via the control panel start control panel device manager and look for a question marked item called something like Other Devices or Unknown Device. I know that further along the question marked branch the item we ll use is labeled Unknown Device. Right click the unknown device this is what Windows Update was attempted to install the ATI 4379 driver to and then left click on Update Driver. In the menu, follow the options to NOT use Windows Update to find the driver. You want to click the option to choose the driver from a list on your computer I can t remember the exact wording. In the list, select the option that is something to the effect of hard disk controllers. After that, select the option that is similar to Hard Disk IDE Controller, NOT any of the ATI drivers listed. When you double click the Hard Disk IDE Controller option, the driver install application will commence with the installation, and it should work.

Restart when prompted, and upon boot Vista will install some secondary drivers for what I m guessing are Serial ATA channels Channel 0 and Channel 1. Restart when prompted.

Your computer should now be back to normal and completely functional. Mine was, and I have an Acer Aspire AS5100-3825. I can t guarantee anything, so good luck. Oh, and make sure the Windows Update for the ATI 4379 driver stays hidden preferably forever.

Thanks for your reply and for your patience, since i m fairly new to the computer world. The information you provided looks  promising. I got as far as left click the UPDATE DRIVER in the menu for the options Not to use Windows Update  to find the driver. When I look for the option to choose the driver from a list, the only option that looks right is something called IDE ATA/ATAPI CONTROLLERS. I don t see anything called Hard Disk IDE Controller, not any of the ATI drivers listed. Is the IDE ATA/ATPI Controller what I m need to double click on to start the installation. I really appreciate all your help and please exuse my NOT KNOWING a whole lot. Thanks again,

That sounds familiar I tried doing that entire walkthrough by memory because I didn t want to uninstall and go through the whole bother again, but go ahead and try that out. It should open up into a new menu with a couple versions of the ATI drivers rollbacks, current, way old, ect. and then the IDE Controller driver that worked for me.

I hope that works. If it doesn t, I ll go ahead and uninstall my driver and do it again, this time typing it out as I do it.

Hi Again,

I tried it and it opens up to Select The Device Driver You Want To Install For This Hardware , then it gives the list.ATI 4379 Serial Controller Version 1.0.60.0 2/1/2007 ATI 4379 Serial Controller Version 1.3.68.2 4/13/2007 Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller.. They all have check marks beside them.   Do I need to uncheck the first two and leave the third one checked and go from there. Thanks again,

I think I just highlighted and/or double clicked the last choice, the Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller. I don t remember any checking/unchecking involved, so just try selecting the last choice and proceeding with it.

Oh great,  I have the same problem.

Acer aspire 5100

Thanks for the advice,

this really helped me.

Bu I have now another problem with my laptop Aspire 5102 WLMi. I have hidden the update of te ATI 4379 driver, but there were also 8 other mostly essential updates of Vista and Office to install.

I installed all of them, but now the computer blocks on starting Vista: I only get the taskbar at the bottom and then the computer freezes.

Any idea.

awesome. Worked like a charm

Thanks a million sh0eI did exactly how you said to do it and my notebook is back up and running like it should be. It worked like a charmI do appreciate all your help and patience, THANKS AGAIN,  DJ

I did encounter another problem though, when the notebook had to restore to an earlier time, a part of the Norton Security  didn t load. Now I get a error message every time I boot up. If I uninstall Norton from the system, I don t have a cd to reinstall, since it is a 90 day free trail that came with the notebook. Anyway, I ll figure something outThanks again for all your help.

It s all good man. Things like that are always pain and giving/getting help is pretty much needed since Vista obviously had no clue what was going on. Glad it worked alright.

And just a side note - the first thing I did with my notebook was get rid of Norton. I ve used a free German anti-virus suite for a couple years now on my XP desktop system and I ve NEVER gotten a virus or had any problem. The English translation isn t too bad either. So far it s been completely error-free on Vista and I ve had absolutely zero security problems.

Go to and click the link for Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic and try it out. It s free, so if you don t like it just uninstall it and stick with Norton. I much prefer Avira to anything I ve paid for, though.

I m using a original Windows Vista Business on a Aspire 5100 and my computer crash after instalation of this driver when i restart the computer loops on Bios and restart again reverting instalation, i have this continuous advise of new hardware found and the screen of this driver instalation please, give  us a solution.

all time that I enter in windows I have that to deny the installation to prevent problems.I do not know more what to do.

using google tranlation

Denis Tocafundo

Hi Dennis,

I got the same problem, evan after all the other solutions that were proposed on this forum.

Finally the only solution was to set te computer back to factory settings on startup push . This means that Vista is reinstalled again as you had to do the first time you started the laptop and that all personal data on the c-drive are lost. Make sure to copy these personal files to the d-drive first I  assume that on your Aspire to there are 2 partitions.

When you start Vista again change the update-system of Vista: Vista may download the updates but not automatical install them. This way you keep control and when you  see again apper the update ATI hide it forever.

Exactly the same problem last night, the updated driver rendered my Laptop useless.

Luckily I was able to restore the system to a resore point made before any of last nights Vista Updates were installed.

For anyone with little knowledge this update could prove disasterous.

I will check out windows device manager tonight to see if any errors are sitting there and take advice from this thread.

Fantastic, What s with the acer 5100 series and this update.

small things i ve noticed with doing this is when i m scrolling down a page with the right side of the mouse pad the icons for scrolling don t come up, but i m not complaining, this update was killing me slowly inside. you might be able to change the icon back but i cant find out where. there may be other differences but i ve not noticed anything else yet.

Thanks again.

I had the sane problem. Solved by downloading the 3112r.sys. Then delete the ATI controller, restart PC. You will see a unknown device. Right click and update driver with the 3112r.sys.

When this driver automaticlly installed my windows went down. I had to restore it using a back up disk. Now I get that driver trying to install ever time I turn on my computer. I just keep blocking it. I have Windows Live One Care and it reccomends that I leave on automatic update. Is there any way to just stop the driver from trying to install block it. and still keep my automatic updates on. I don t know much about fixing laptops. I have the Acer aspire 5100-5033 with Windows Vista Premium.

HAD THE SAME PROBLEM, AFTER ABOUT 1.5 HRS I USEDTHE RECOVERY OPTION AND RETURNED COMP TO FACTORY DEFAULT.           ACE 5100 -3357      IT TOOK ABOUT 15 MIN.    I MUST SAY THAT EVEN THOUGH MICROSOFT SHOULD NOT HAVE PUBLISHED THIS UP-DATE IN THIS MANNER THE RECOVERY OPTION IS PRETTY COOL.

P.S. YOU WILL LOOSE THIRD PARTY SOFTWEAR INSTALLATIONS.

where did you get the SiI3112r.sis driver from. It isn t on the SI site any more.

I tried the fix of rolling back to the original driver and it worked fine, but then I installed 2 updates to the driver successfully and then the third came up as before and did not install correctly again.  Are we just to leave the older driver installed and not accept the option to upgrade.

Thanks

New Aspire 5100 bought last week, seemed to be working normally until the failed driver installation from windows update.

This had knocked out the second Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller, leaving only Channel 0 on one controller visible in device manager.

In this condition the optical drive would not always load a disk and frequently hung, and there were randon program freezes when trying to use the computer.

Went through the install unknown device/storage controllers/standard PCI IDE controller routine and now device manager is showing both controllers with two channel 0 s and channel1.

Laptop now appears to be working ok but when I run the speed tests on pcpitstop.com it comes up with unusually slow speed drives C D with a score of 9 compared to a typical 23.

Has anyone run tests on pcpitstop before they had the driver installation problem.

Try this  It seems to have worked for me.

It s bad enough there is no Linux support for these video cards but it s outright irritating that there is practically non-existent m support.

shOe has the fix, dj has the details Thanks

exactly, exactly..

I have the same problem with my acer aspire 5100. video and audio playback is very choppy and sometimes the music playback has ticks. but when i load the files onto my vaio desktop there isn t any tick noises. the files play fine. so it must be something with the video and audio.

as far as this update goes for our laptops, i messaged tech support at acer and asked them to address this issue for all of us. I also gave them the link to this forum so they could review all the troubles we are having. I am awaiting an answer so far. As soon as I get one, I will post it on here. Good luck with your aspire notebook, I was hoping for a great dvd experience on this 5100 but playback of movies sucks. what can we do. since the video chip does not carry its own separate ram but shares it with the rest of the computer then maybe there is a way to tweak that.. anyone else here have any suggestions.

rob

i have the same problem with my acer5100, choppy video and music playback. i was hoping for a great dvd play experience but i am very disappointed too.

video chip has shared memory and perhaps thats the problem. maybe there is a way to tweak this

i have email acer tech support about the update here, and gave a link to all the posts here as well. hopefully they will get back to me with the answers.

i ll keep you posted.

I have the same issue with ATI 4379. I have a new Acer 5100, but now I have this trouble   I can not install this driver and the system doesnt accept this, it is a very bug issue,

Someone has any idea for this. I try all tips in this forum but is impossible. How we can remove the message the system has the same name for this device. Anyone has some registry key for that  I think that WindowsUpdate brake some registry keys with attempt install this ATI 4379

Thanks a lot.

Me Toooo..

Acer 5100-5023 ,

Yea, I have thought about it and it seems to be with serial harddrive or the Video card. Still looking for a upgrade. or fix. Can t find one yet.

UMmm,   Vista, Maybe

I had the same problem installing this driver on my Acer Aspire 5100-5840. The solution, as others have noted, is to roll back the driver to the earlier one, or to simply allow Vista to reinstall the old one upon restarting the laptop.

Vista seems to have a problem installing new drivers for hardware that is currently in use by the machine e.g., on my brother s notebook, and also on my wife s notebook, I couldn t get the latest wi-fi drivers to install, and I had to do a rollback; then I tried something different: I let windows download the new drivers, but I then disabled the wi-fi card just before the installation of the new drivers actually started--and it worked.

OK.  I have been getting quite a few emails asking for further instructions and other problems, so here are some step-by-step instructions for those of you that are having troubles:

1.  Reboot your computer into the Last Known Good Configuration

     a.  You do this by rebooting and pressing either the F8 key, or the Ctrl key I can t remember which

2.  Go to the Silicon Image website -  0 cid 0

     a.  There are several dropdowns that ask for your particulars.

3.  If you have an Aspire 5100 or 3100, or one from that series, you need Sil3112 - PCI to 2 port SATA150.

     a.  I have an Aspire 5100, so I am not 100 sure about the others.

4.  In the other dropdowns, you want Driver and your OS.

5.  Download the driver file and unzip it to a directory somewhere on you hard drive.

6.  Go to device mananger, then to ATI 4379 Serial ATA Controller.

7.  Right click, and Update Driver.

8.  Go through the process, but update from file, and point the browser to the. inf file in the directory you unzipped the driver file into.

9.  This will update the driver with the correct version.

10.  Reboot your computer.

11.  Once rebooted, go to Windows Update and hide the ATI 4379 Serial ATA Controller update.

12.  If you have some other series of computer Aspire 5346 or something, chances are you have the same controller.

     a.  If you download the wrong driver and try to update with it, Windows will tell you it is the wrong one.

GREAT..

thx for your step-by-step instructions :-. works great with my acer 3100.

Thanks. I have an Acer Aspire 5100 too, and your message was so god for me.. thanks again.

Sebastian. From Argentina.

Its the ATI graphic card that causes the problem but at this point there is no fix for it

Hey,

I have this damned problem too after a reformat.

The above guidelines seem solid enough, however when I tried this and the ATI 4379 Serial ATA Controller was in the list, it simply denied the driver update saying that it already had the best drivers. So then I uninstalled the decvice. I let it install itself and it is saying ATI 4379 Serial ATA Controller is already in use or something of that nature, Implying that it can t install because something is using it or shares the same name.

Now,

I noticed at the ATI Catalyst update manager cannot isntall the southbridge device driver either.. are these two driver items the same thing.. Neither of them will install and I m getting choppy graphics with NO video playback..

ASPIRE 5100

This is retarded, although the factory setting on the laptop were laggy and annoying as usual, atleast it worked. Can you please help.

How can I find out which one of these devices my computer has.    We have many Acer Aspire 5100 s   this particular one that is having the issues is much newer completely different.   It now has a AMD Turion64X2 with a ATI Radion Express 1100 graphics a webcam. Many of the other 5100s are much different without the Vista issues

Thanks

Hey,

You have the same laptop as me. The way I am now dealing with it is with a clean format. Format your laptop and run all the windows updates. When it installs or tries to install the ATA device, restart after it is complete then hide the update from windows update and install it manually like the guy on page 3 suggests it works, you need the drivers he suggested. Then run windows update and install the catalyst drivers from ACER support site NOT the 8c version, the full stable version 8.x.x at the bottom and the problem shouldnt re appear, or atleast you wont hear about it again.

Having same problem.  Says the name is already in use as either a service name or a service display name in the meantime my Acer 5100 just isn t working like it was before I tried updating.  Any suggestions.

Hi,

To be honest I think neither Microsoft nor ATI have released a fix for this issue.

The best thing to do is update the ATA device with windows update until it is installed and the ATA device is shown in Device manager as ATI Serial ATA controller, when it is, and there are still windows updates availiable for it just hide the updates. Reguarding the Catalyst drivers - install the drivers from the ACER website but use the stable 8.x.x.x version rather than 8c, then just install and leave them alone. Nothing should reoccur. It might not fix it but it will take it away, if you know what I mean. I guess Microsoft or ATI will fix it properly in the future.

I also have a Acer 5100 and had the same problem, I read almost all the post over here and decided to do a system restore to a day before the windows update. When I restarted, the driver was there, wanting to be installed again, so I hided it, as somebody suggested and it worked, I haven t had the problem again.

Ggyg

If you go to automatic updates and view your installation history you ll see that the ATI 4379 controller was installed on 9/16/07. For some reason it also has another instant of the SATA controller trying to install itself again be aware that this is the installation that keeps failing. All you have to do is right click on the ATI 4379 Serial ATA controller and go to Hide Update.

which one did you dl.  do you have the same 5100 as i.

I have struggled for months with this issue. Was about to drop my Acer 3100 from the tallest building, and be happy. I am no expert but absolutely recommend sh0e s fix. It has completely solved all of my problems and is a 100 working fix. I only wish I would ve found this earlier. THANK YOU SIR

Well i went to silicon image site and downloaded the latest SiI3x12 32-bit Windows BASE Driver 1.3.68.2 and installed it on the partitions screen that screen where we see partitions listed when we go to install Vista, as described on the ReadME file of the zip. I formatted my hard drive and installed Vista again as well.

Everything is working fine on my computer besides an error of ATI driver when i see full screen videos on youtube and the ATI South Bridge driver not installing 100, but this update for ATI Silicon Image is still there on the Microsoft, and what i did was to hide it.

However, now this update has been modified, now it says it has been published on 12/28/2007. Can someone test this new version and say if it still gives errors.

EDIT: i tested this new version, and got the same error lol. Needed to use system restore tool

Hello there, so is it possible to install this driver from the partition screen. Does anyone know if it really solves the sound chopping problem. Because this was one of the reasons i ve had to downgrade my system to XP. I kinda don t like to use my system at full performance, it dries my entire battery in a few hours.

Thx

Thanks a lot, had some probs figuring it out as the commands are different with vista but worked wonders. Thanks..

I have a 5100, I have the same problem put now Vista will not start and the restore points do not work, I can get to DOS and all the drives work C: USB, etc , does anyone know how to get the display driver old version and load it on the the hard drive so I can restart the machine and get Vista running.

I m trying to avoid using recovery disk if possible I do have my data backed up, but don t want the hassle of all the reinstalling

Sorry, that didn t help. The install prompt keeps coming back. Same problem here having a Medion MD 96360

Same situation here and diables the Home server, diconnect this computer fron the network, wonder why Microsoft has this problem, only mine is double have two ACER 5100 systems.

Hi i have been using a ACER 5100 for about 6 month, no problems.

have auto-upgraded from Windows and now have the same problem as everybody else here.

By the life of me, i cannot understand, that if this has problem has started in beginning of 2007, why Microsoft hasn t bothered finding a solution to the problem.

Now, my Laptop won t even start.

If anybody has a fix for this, any help would be great.

Txs

how do i know which SiI3 my laptop has. where do i find this out. any help is greatly appreciated.

acer aspire 5100-3357 laptop

i have the same problem whenever my computer restartsit keeps rebooting..when rebooting your comp try pressing i think the F9 OR F10 buttons and it will show options try the the advanced boot and should show safe mode and all other options for boot. i looked for the last known good configuration option and the comp finally worked just did that todaymaybe i got lucky but then again this is the 3rd times its happend too me. its not a fix but should get your computer running.

Important question in response to Wazzzzuuuuuup s fix on page 3.

So, I ve followed all the steps until 6.

My problem is that I cannot find the ATI 4379 driver when I go to my device driver.

I did find it earlier, but since I tried shoE s fix I can no longer find it. Anyone have an idea on how to get it back.

Simple fix, worked great..  Thanks.

i have same problem.  i went back to a restore point, so system is working.  but since the update is listed as failed, i can t hide it, and every time i power-up, it wants to resume the update.  i have to click ask me later.   i ll be happy to keep the older version, it worked fine.

can anyone tell me how to make it stop trying to resume the failed update, at every power-up.

please help

This is not the first time that a Driver update provided by the Microsoft Update process has not been needed for the ATI 4379 ATA Storage Controller; happened in August 2007 last year as well.  Have hidden the MS driver update as suggested in another post on this site, but, I still get the panel at startup wanting me to download the required driver, which I keep replying to that I don t want to be advised, or, remind me later, neither works to delete this annoying bootup message and in some cases also messes up the location of the existing driver in the Device Manager tree.

Present driver by the way that works is: 1.3.71.1, dated 8/19/08.

This driver problem however creates a No Bootup situation as the computer Acer 5100-5540 always wants to go into the Repair Mode if it s been shutdown. .  System Restore after the Repair Mode got my machine up and running again but it took about 3 weeks to get it back to normal.  ACER have advised me to never install drivers from the Microsoft site patch Tues. and only/always  go to Acer s site for none Microsoft drivers; they were very adamant that the only thing you want to download from Microsoft is security patches for Windows. .

.any help is appreciated; tired of going thru the Repair or Restore functions to get the thing fired up and when it is fired up and working properly I still get the Desktop Message wanting to install the driver that is not required which is an annoyance that I want to get rid of.thanks: Doug.

I have the same problem. After I updated my vista, it didn t boot. System Restore and Last Good Configuration didn t help my Aspire 5100. Help me

HELP PLEASE.. I have had this ATI SATA problem and it has now crashed my ACER 3100. The restore points dont work at all, and I have no system restore disk. WHAT CAN I DO. Someone please help me.

Ive had the same problem with my aspire 5100 still cannot get the install prompt to disappear but if you have vista here is a repair disk if it has crashed

you need to click and download imgburn and you need to download the correct version of the repair disk.

Waz;

Thanks that did it for my Acer 5100.

Here is a bit more detail for others following in out footsteps

1 For the 5100 - download the Si3112 package

2 Unzip the file contents and place this in a conventient location.

3 Open Windows Explorer and navigate to c: windows system32 drivers.

4 Remove the si3112.sys and si3112r.sys if present driver files.

5 Run REGEDIT and scan for the key si3112.

6 For each si3112 entry in the registry, remove it.

7 Reboot your PC   If you get a new hardware found dialog - cancel it

8 Right Mouse My Compter and chose the manage option from the pop-up menu.

9 In the System Manager, high-light the Device Manager entry.

10 Then highlight the Storahe Controllers entry in the right-hand pane

11 Then select Action Add Legacy Hardware from the top menu

12 In the resulting Wizard choose the Install the hardware manually option.

13 In the next selection, choose Storage Controllers.

14 The select Have Disk in the next prompt.

15 Navigate to the location from step 2

16 select the si3112 entry

17 hit Next and let the wizard complete the install

18 Reboot the PC

You should now be OK.  :-

Regards Chris

I m having the same issue with the update its really pissing me off. And again its an ACER aspire 5100.

New problem with it; its showing up as an unknown device and i can roll back my driver for it. Same as before I have and Acer Aspire 5100 laptop. Its really pissing me off how windows updates say we need this but yet it doesnt work or it messes up our computers.

I m having the driver problem also, I tried the suggested fix and it didn t work.

I bought my Aspire 5100-5455 brand new for 270 and figured I would give Vista a try seeing I have more than one laptop.

Well it s been almost one year and I have to say IT SUCKS.

These updates came out and Vista got worse. So bad the laptop would not boot and when it did it was even slower.

I reverted to my 800mhz XP Pro laptop and discovered what I was missing. SPEED..

I downloaded all the XP files last night for my Acer and I am going back to XP because Vista just sucks.

Anyone who says they have no problems with Vista does not use the pc for serious work.

Thank you, CPollach:

I ve tried to follow your instructions - and it worked

Have tried for several weeks.

Once again, thanks.

Regards hardrun

Wants to find driver all the time but can t install and maybe even corrupts my start up.  Acer 5100

Exactly the same problem.  Update fails to install, and start up corrupted.  The link you posted above don t work for me.  What does it say..

I too have an Acer Aspire 5100, so Im guessing its related to this brand of laptop.

In order to get my laptop working this morning ready for work, was to set it to boot at last known working settings at the warning window that showed up upon booting.

I was hoping I could give a little info here for some people with the Acer Aspire 5100 and the problem with the ATI 4379 serial controller that keeps showing up as an optional update. If you go to the Control Panel and open Device Manager. Towards the bottom of that page you will see a line named Storage Controllers. Click on that to open it and you will or should anyway notice that the ATI 4379 serial ATA controller is already installed on your computer. I tried installing the optional update that Microsoft offered me and it crashed my whole system. Don t ask me why Microsoft is offering this if it s already installed. It can only harm your system, beleive me. Do what most people are saying here and hide it forever. I asked some techs about it and they told me that Microsoft and Acer need to be made aware of this, so there can be some kind of fix made.

Thanks for the help in this thread - I spent most of the weekend trying to repair my aunt s laptop Aspire 5100 - Vista Premium after falling into this windows update issue. While I have the PC back to functioning through a series of system restores and manual editing, I am not convinced it is perfectly stable and was researching additional potential longer term solutions. I upgraded the bios to version 3.13 from the European acer site and that didn t resolve anything additional on this topic. I also tried the most recent ATI X1100 driver set including southbridge from 2009/03/11 and that didn t resolve it. In looking at the silicon image site referenced above for drivers, I notice that there is also a section there for BIOS and it has been relatively active over the last few years for the 3112. Has anyone updated their BIOS to the most recent version 4.2.84 or is that not a good idea because of customized firmware. If that update has been tried on this model Acer, I assume one would use the base firmware and not the raid firmware, correct.

Any help or thoughts on this approach would be appreciated.

Thanks

hi my dads laptop has same problem, still no fix yet for this, tried solutions above but still doesnt fix driver problem..does this affect running of laptop

I checked in on my Aunt s laptop a little more last night as I am still worried about its behavior after so many restores probably 7 or 8 last Sunday. I captured the information when it was working on Sunday and it listed the driver at that time for the ATA controller as version 1.3.71.1 dated 05/19/08. When I checked in on the laptop last night, that driver was listed as version 1.0.62.0 dated 08/17/07.  I attempted to upgrade the driver from version 1.0.62.0 to the silicon image driver referenced above version 1.3.68.2 but the update failed. Then when I tried to manually select a driver to use for that piece of hardware, I saw that there were 3 versions of driver already available on the machine

1.0.60.0

1.0.62.0

1.3.68.2

Unfortunately, although I tried several times I could not get the laptop to successfully update to 1.3.68.2 even though I had a fresh driver set on the hard drive and and driver already installed according to my machine - I tried both ways and the process would begin and then return an error.

Based on the Silicon Image site, it appears that I have both base drivers 1.3.68.2 and 1.3.71.1 and raid drivers 1.0.60.0 and 1.0.62.0 installed for this piece of hardware and it appears to be functioning now with 1.0.62.0 installed. I have left it alone now and will update in a couple of weeks as to whether it continues to behave - I don t know if this is an answer to anything but I thought I would provide more information as to what I uncovered in continuing to troubleshoot this really problematic issue.

Did you ever get this problem fixed. I just found this forum doing a search on this same issue with my aspire 5100 with vista os. My system was fine until I dowloaded a program called driver detective to see if maybe I could improve the overall performance. The program said I had several outdated drivers and I started downloading and installing it s recommendations. Well it did nothing but cause havoc to my system and wish I had never downloaded the program now. I went to system restore to try and get it back to the way it was before messing with that program. This restore did not fix it. I now cannot reboot without going into repair mode and then windows update tries to install ATI 4379 serial ATA controller but fails at every attempt.

I noticed there were a fix recommended here, but also noticed that it didn t work for some people. I m not the most computer savy person and was afraid to try the fix without screwing it up more.

Any updates on this issue. Anyone know if Acer Microsoft have made any headway on remedies.

Welcome ohmy ohmy is right, what a mess. To my knowledge most folks with the problem, I to have the Aspire 5100, still have the problem. I to have tried the fixes mentioned in this site but nothing has worked. Have the problem since I downloaded from Microsoft a driver for the ATI 4379 Serial ATA Controller somewhere around Sept. 2008. As it turns out the driver was not needed as the existing driver was quite satisfactory and seems to be the latest one.  ACER recommend using System Restore to set it back however by the time I tried this solution the files had been superceded/replaced so system restore was not available. ACER as well advised to never download anything from Microsoft that was not related to Windows or a Microsoft program; i.e. never download drivers for non-microsoft products.   Using safe mode and last known good configuration to boot up I am able to get it started; each time I bootup I get the notice that windows has found new hardware and wants to install the software; I ignore the notice and just select remind me later, this permits me to continue the bootup; choosing either of the other 2 options makes a mess of a running laptop as I have tried both and they result in a catastrophe. .  Microsoft and Acer seem to be living with the problem, one would think that a registry key change would eliminate the New Hardware warning but so far there s no help on the horizon and I m living with it.

good luck: McDoogie

I have same problem on my Aspire5100 too, but you can probably live without looking the notice.

I applied a standard dual channel PCIIDE controller driver for 2 detected IDE devices SATA PIDE in the device manager manually.

At present, it has not appeared since then.

Hi, thank you very much for he perfect solution.

Witchone was the perfect solution, please write in steps.

This is causing me massive amounts of problems and until last night it would at least self repair. Now it doesn t even do that. I managed to get the computer to start by finding a restore point under the advance settings. Now I don t even dare to switch the machine off.

I have looked at CPollach s step by step but I have no idea what to download from the silicon image site since I don t know if I have a Raid hardrive or not. The culprit seems to be the SI3112r.sys file. It doesn t have a digial signature and on the properties it says Medley and not ATI etc.

So what to do.

I have a ACER 5301 WLMi with a AMD Turion tm 64x2 Mobile technology TL-52 1.6 GHz processor.

thx. it work s fine. don t change a running system ; but it isn t easy with microsoft. lol

At present, it has not appeared since then.

What did you say here.  I have no clue what you are talking about.  As daggen said - please write in steps.

My 5100 was OK for a year or so - but I installed Windows 7 and am having the same problem I had back then.

Could you please tell me what process you used to do this.

I had the same problem but have just overcome it.

Restart your PC/Laptop and when you get the black screen press F8.

Arrow down to where it has an option to start up at the last successful reboot.

My Laptop has just done exactly what it says

Thanks a lot sh0e, your fix worked for me.

But really strange that Microsoft has not improved this.

This problem has created a mess for 2 1/2 years now

installed the windows update on my acer 5100 couple days ago for the ati 4379 serial ata controller and the computer kept restarting. i did the windows startup repair over and over but it could never fix it. i tried system restore to the last 3 configurations and still nothing worked.

pressed F8 at start up as well and selected last good config and computer finally started after 3 days of thinking i had to do a clean install..

only problem was that the driver for the ati 4379 kept trying to install and failed at startup. followed WAZZZZPPPPPP s advice above but driver said it was already updated.

only problem now is that my dvd drive doesn t show up. damn acers. time to google some more.

Tips from the PitCrew

If a hardware device isn t functioning properly, or if a program or game that you re installing states that it requires newer drivers, a driver update will be in order.

Also, with many wireless adapters it is important to stay current as updates often contain security fixes. A driver update may also improve stability and performance, or may fix issues with games, programs and power management.

New drivers can unlock additional features for a device that may not have been available before. If you receive notification from a program or a manufacturer that a newer driver is available, it would be a good idea to check the release notes and see what s different than the driver you re already using.
